Nancy Tallent

Nancy Tallent, 75, of Mills Branch Road, Sylva, died Monday, Nov. 1, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Revs. Tommy Ashe, Hardin Nicholson and Eddie Stillwell will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Dillsboro. She was a daughter of the late Lyle Wilson and Edna Taylor Wilson.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Emmaline Prader and Mildred Buchanan; one brother, James Roy Wilson; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Claude H. Tallent; one son, Kenneth H. Tallent of Sylva; four daughters, Catherine Pannell, Linda Mull, Sandra Tallent and Gina Franks, all of Sylva; one brother, Albert Lyle Wilson of Cullowhee; one sister, Ruth Adams of Cullowhee; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Beatrice Montgomery Evans

Beatrice Montgomery Evans, 71, of Cashiers, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Glenville.

A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Decatur, Ga.

Surviving are her husband, Herbert Evans; two sons, Mike Glenn and John Glenn; three daughters, Amy Glenn White, Beth Glenn Marshall and Sarah Glenn; and 11 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Lois M. Conner Allison

Lois M. Conner Allison, 60, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Friday, Oct. 29, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 1, at Goldfinch Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Burial was in Crestview Cemetery in Myrtle Beach.

She was a daughter of the late Herbert and Nora Queen Young of Cullowhee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Conner; three brothers, Dillard, Willard and Edgar Young; and one sister, Lorina Young.

Surviving are her husband, Carl Allison; four sons, Herb Conner of Kathleen, Ga., Victor Conner of Warner Robins, Ga., Greg and Marty Conner of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four sisters, Ruby Melton of Sylva, Emma Jean Queen of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Edna Coggins and Gladys Webb of Cullowhee; four brothers, Woodrow Young of Lyman, Wash., Walter Young of Sylva, Hayes Young of Lancaster, S.C., and Jack Young of Kershaw, S.C.; two stepchildren; nine grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.


John Henry Crowe

John Henry Crowe, 77, of Cherokee's Big Witch Community, died Saturday, Oct. 30, in Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m, Tuesday, Nov. 2, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. The Revs. Ray Kinsland and Tom Wachacha officiated. Burial was in the Twister-Littlejohn Cemetery. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late David and Sally Chiltoski Crowe and was a retired employee with the Cherokee Boys Club.

Surviving are three daughters, Marion Louise Crowe and Barbara Joyce Watson, both of Cherokee, and Mary Jane Smith of Martin, Ga.; four sons, Clifton Johnson of Riceville, Tenn., Virgil Glenn Crowe, Benny Wade Crowe and Larry Allen Crowe, all of Cherokee; two sisters, Eleanor Harding and Luzine Washington, both of Cherokee; one brother, Abraham Crowe of Cherokee; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.


Ray Mitchell "Mickey" Littlejohn, 62

Ray Mitchell "Mickey" Littlejohn, 62, of Old River Road, Cherokee, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct 31, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Cherokee United Methodist Church. The Revs. Tina Evans and Steve Phillipi officiated. Burial was in Litttejohn Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Swain County, returning in 1988. He was a retired self-employed general building contractor working in South Carolina for 30 years and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member of Cherokee United Methodist Church, of which he was an elder, on the finance committee, chairman of the new education building, member of the pastor parish relation committee, treasurer of the Methodist Men. He was chief judge of Yellow Hill election board and son of the late Isaac Ike and Ruth Sneed Littlejohn.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Rathbone Littlejohn; two daughters, Margaret Littlejohn Wakefield of Charlotte and Agnes Littlejohn Cloud of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one son, Isaac Mitchell Littlejohn II of Garnett, S.C.; one stepdaughter, Tootsie Franklin of Waynesville; two stepsons, Donald Rogers of Orlando, Fla., and Roddy Rogers of Waynesville; four sisters, Carmelita Monteith, Mary Alice Stark, Johnnie Sue Myers and Frances Smith, all of Cherokee; and 12 grandchildren.

Steven Lloyd Jones

Steven Lloyd Jones, 34, of Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 24. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Mike Germano officiated. Burial was in the Jones Family Cemetery in Barkers Creek community.

A native of Raleigh, he was living in Jackson County at the time of his death. He was the paternal grandson of the late Ben and Lottie Jones, formerly of Barkers Creek community, and the maternal grandson of the late Wilmon Pearce.

Surviving are his parents, A.D. and Margaret Jones of Raleigh; two brothers, Alan and Jeff Jones of Raleigh; one son, Connor Lloyd Jones; and one daughter, Kalen Victoria Jones, both of Orem, Utah; and his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Pearce of Raleigh.


Elmer Lloyd "Buck" Whitmire

Elmer Lloyd "Buck" Whitmire, 90, of Glenville, died Monday, Nov. 1, at the Brian Center in Brevard after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Glenville Wesleyan Church. The Revs. Ray Lewis and Johnny Norris will officiate. Burial will be at Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lloyd, John, Gordon and Talmadge Leopard, Harvey Lusk and Keith Galloway.

A native of Pickens, S.C., he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a retired timberman, son of the late Abe and Levie Chapman Whitmire and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris Ellen Whitmire; two sisters, Ola Galloway and Minnie Leopard; and two brothers, Void and Dillard Whitmire.

Surviving are five daughters, Louise Galloway of Pisgah Forest, Geneva Whitmire and Mary Helen Metcalf of Hendersonville, Christine Volrath of Brevard, and Theresa Hamilton of Kannapolis; four sons, Coleman Whitmire of Florida, Elmer Whitmire Jr. and Charles Whitmire of South Carolina, and Douglas Whitmire of Maryland; three sisters, Alva Robinson and Vergie Revis of Brevard, Gertie Leopard of Oregon; one brother, Roland Whitmire of Rosman; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the church. Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


The Rev. Charles P. Ginn

The Rev. Charles P. Ginn, 82, of Dillsboro Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, at his residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) at Sylva First Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Ed Beddingfield and Dr. John Bunn will officiate. Burial will be at Keener Cemetery.

A native of Commerce, Ga., he had lived in Jackson County for the past 66 years. He was a retired Baptist minister serving several churches in Western North Carolina for the past 45 years. The son of the late Hamilton Franklin and Dovie Lou Adams Ginn, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by one son, Steve Ginn; four brothers; and three sisters. Surviving are his wife, Edna Allen Ginn; two sons, Lloyd Allen Ginn of Chicago and Phil Ginn of Boone; one sister, Bessie Maxwell of Commerce, Ga.; and four granddaughters.

The family will receive friends from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. today (Thursday) at Sylva First Baptist Church.

Bertha Jane Battle, 87, of Cullowhee's Speedwell community, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Harris Regional Hospital.
