Evelyn SuttonEvelyn Jarrett Sutton, 87, of Webster, died Wednesday, May 3, at Harris Regional Hospital.Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, May 5, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. Burial was at Long Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Billy Ray Sneed, Perry Sutton, Ray Buchanan, Junior Monteith, Clifton Sutton and Ray Knight. A native of Dillsboro, she was the daughter of the late Marcus Y. and Minnie Snyder Jarrett and the wife of the late R.D. "Chick" Sutton. She and her husband were former owners and operators of the Greystone Lodge for many years. She attended Asheville Normal School and Cullowhee Teacheršs College and taught in public schools in Jackson and Cherokee counties. She was a member of Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church for more than 65 years and served as Sunday school teacher and church pianist for many years. She was a member of WMU and served as president and mission support chairman. She retired in 1974 as postmaster of Dillsboro Post Office, after serving 27 years. She was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Whitworth of Asheville. She is survived by two nephews, Harold Morgan of Whittier and Larry Morgan of Arden; one great-nephew; and two great-great-nephews. Barbara WoodBarbara Wood, 60, of Outback Way, Whittier, died Saturday, May 6, at Harris Regional Hospital.Services were held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 8, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Tommy Ashe officiated. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a nurse at Harris Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of Dallas Nicholson Ward of Whittier and the late Ralph Ward. Surviving are one daughter, Sharron Case of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons, Kenny and Tony Wood, both of Franklin; one brother, Clifford Ward of West Columbia, S.C.; and five grandchildren. The Rev. Ned Pressley officiated. Burial was in the Union Hill Cemetery. A native of Haywood County, he had lived most of his life in Swain and Jackson counties. He was a son of the late William Clifford and Mary Agnes Franklin Green. Before his illness he had been a foreman at Maness Manufacturing Co. in Bryson City for about 15 years. He attended Whittier Church of God. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Roper Green; one daughter, Cynthia Renila Shorpshire of Whittier; two sons, Jeff Green and Dean Waldroup, both of Asheville; four brothers, Eugene Green of Asheville, James Green of Whittier, Peter H. Green of Raleigh and John M. Green of Waynesville; five sisters, Betty Ann Nantz of Lincolnton, Frances Ariene James of Waynesville, Sue Ellen Green of Lincolnton, Nancy Faye and Elizabeth Jane, both of Texas; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Burch, Fred, George and Will McConnell; and five sisters, Callie McConnell, Annie Cowan, Bonnie Cowan, Myrtle Crisp and Ida Belle Deitz. The Rev. Michael Hudson officiated. Burial was at Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington, S.C. He was a native of Rocky Mount, a former resident of Darlington, S.C., a resident of Webster and member of Retired English Professors from Western Carolina University. He attended Duke University and the University of South Carolina, receiving a master's and bachelor of arts degree, and Vanderbilt University, receiving a Ph.D. He was a writer of bibliography (1964-1991) and author of various articles from 1957 to 1994. He was a member of International Biographical Association, Cambridge University, England, American Philosophical Society, American Council of Learned Societies and Seminarian National Endowment Humanities. A U.S. veteran of World War II, he was the son of the late Nell Ramsey Brown. Surviving are his father, Allan E. Brown, and stepmother, Ruth, of Florida; three sons, Anthony Eugene Brown Jr. of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, David Brown of Asheville and Robert Brown of Hartland. Wis.; and one stepsister, Anne M. Gary Deskins officiated. He was born in Commerce, Ga., to Sim Thomas and Hattie Driver McGinnis. A Vader, Wash., resident for 52 years, he had also lived in Sylva. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, moving to Vader in 1948. His wife of more than 50 years, Lucy, died in 1998. Surviving are three sons, James Ronald, Thomas Douglas and Jerry Gene, all of Vader; and three brothers, Gene of Alexandria, Va., and Sim and Thomas, both of Athens, Tenn. India CogginsIndia P. Coggins, 91, of Caldwell Street, Sylva, died Tuesday, May 9, in Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Double Springs Church of God, of which she was a member. The Rev. Paul Brooks will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. A native of Macon County, she had lived most of her life in Jackson County. She was a daughter of the late William J. and Aretha Trantham Passmore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lindsay Coggins. Surviving are three sisters, Cora Passmore Carnidore and Lura Canupp, both of Rockhill, S.C., and Ethel Heffner of Franklin; and one brother, Charlie Passmore of Bullpen. A native of Macon County and a former resident of Jackson County, she spent the remaining years of her life in Rabun County, Ga. She was a daughter of the late John C. and Laura E. McCracken Cloer. She was a member of Blue Heights Baptist Church in Mountain City, Ga. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Louise Ensley; one daughter, Erma Jean Ensley; and two sons, Roy Lee Cloer and Charles Boyd Ensley. Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Cross of Clayton, Ga., and Glenda Moody of Sylva; one son, John D. Cloer of Manchester, Tenn.; two brothers, Howard Cloer of the home and the Rev. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell, Roger Stewman and Wesley Hooper officiated. Burial was at Pine Ridge Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Dean officiating at graveside. A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 40 years and a member of the church choir. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Laura Dean Bryson. She was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers. |

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Lonnie Marion Dills; three sons, Lebern Dills, Kenneth Dills and Leonard Dills, all of Cullowhee; five daughters, Mary Sue Stephens of Sylva, Betty Littrell of Cullowhee, Johnnie Nell Locke Bishop and Ruth Thompson, both of Cullowhee, and Martha Fox of Franklin; one brother, Ben Lee Bryson of Darrington, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Fullbright; three stepsons, Jerry Fullbright of Sylva, Kenneth Fullbright of Weaverville and Al Fullbright of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Opal Holden of Glenville, Ruth McCoy of Sedro Wolley, Wash., Joan Zimbury of Everett, Wash., and Nancy Ennis of Richmond, Va.; and several grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
