The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Jeff Rhyne

Jeff C. Rhyne, 64, of Sylva's Fisher Creek community, long-time Sylva Herald employee, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Sylva First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 925, Sylva, N.C. 28779.

Margie Messer

Margie E. Messer, 91, of Dillsboro died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. David Souderes officiated. Burial was at Parris Cemetery.

She was a native of Haywood County and lived in Jackson County since 1931. She was a daughter of the late C.M. and Grace Pruett Chambers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Sod" Messer; three brothers, Lewis, Glenn and Gary; one sister, Laura; and one daughter, Marian Franks.

Surviving are one sister, Edna Edwards of Bethel; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pauline Parker

Pauline Bradley Parker, 79, of 77 Grassy Branch Road in Cherokee's Yellowhill community died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at Towstring Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The pastor, Doug Mathews, and the Revs. Dan Lambert and Ray Lambert officiated. Burial was in Towstring Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons.

She was a daughter of the late Arie J. and Florence Lambert Bradley and wife of Robert James Parker, who died in 1999. She was in the food service business.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Annie Lou Parker; and one son, James Robert Parker.

Surviving are three daughters, Loretta George and Binnie Parker, both of Cherokee, and Christi Brockington of Columbia, S.C.; six sons, Dwight Parker, Brian Parker, Jason Parker and Steve Parker, all of Cherokee, Gene Parker of Whittier, and D.L. Parker of Rogersville, Tenn.; six sisters, Elsie Huskey, Ethel Adams, Stella Webb, Delores Bradley, Glenda Welch and Brenda Smith; one brother, Kenneth Bradley; 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City, was in charge of the arrangements.


Ethel Lambert

Ethel Gertrude Buchanan Lambert, 78, of Winterhaven Drive, Sylva, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Eugene Ridley officiated. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she retired from Skyland Care Center in the housekeeping department. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Judson and Florence Dills Buchanan.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jody Russell Lambert; one brother, Coy Buchanan; and two sisters, Virginia Buchanan and Edith Carnes.

Surviving are one daughter, Betty L. Cabe of Cullowhee; three sons, Virgil Russell Lambert and Billy Lambert, both of Whittier, and Charles Lambert of Asheville; one sister, Birdell Cope of Virginia; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren.

James Cannon

James Coleman Cannon Jr., 82, of Dillsboro died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at his residence after a period of declining health.

A memorial service was held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 14, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Sylva.

A native and lifelong resident of Dillsboro, he was the son of the late Cole and Rosa Watkins Cannon.

He was a graduate of Sylva High School and attended Georgia Military Academy and Emory University before graduating from Western Carolina University. He served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. Upon returning from Europe, he joined the family business, Cannon Brothers Gas and Oil Company, eventually becoming president and sole owner. He sold the business when he retired in 1985.

He served as mayor of Dillsboro multiple times and was instrumental in developing Dillsboro as a shopping district. He was a world-wide traveler.

He was a founding member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a member of the Dillsboro Masonic Lodge and on the board of directors of Jackson Savings Bank. He was formerly on the board of Wachovia Bank, a longtime member of the Rotary, and served on the boards of C.J. Harris Community Hospital and the N.C. Humanities Council.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Terrell.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Dr. Velta B. Cannon; one daughter, Maria Cannon of Orlando, Fla.; and one son, John Cannon of Sylva.

Ferry Adams

Ferry Lee Revis Adams, 88, formerly of Whittier, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Brighton, Mich.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. David Baxter officiated. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

She was born Sept. 22, 1915, in Jackson County to the late J.T. and Ota Brown Revis. She was a Girl Scout leader, a member of Whittier Community Development Club, and a member of Whittier United Methodist Church. She supported her military husband through many moves, retiring in 1976 to make their home in Whittier until relocating to Brighton in the fall of 2002.

Her husband, Henry C. Adams, died in 1997.

Surviving are one son, Dr. Robert Adams of Great Falls, Va.; two daughters, Carole Lee Carlsen of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Wanda Cutchins of Pickney, Mich.; one sister, Marian Russell of Anderson, Ind.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Annie Childers

Annie Dee Barnes Childers, 73, of Crimson Drive, Whittier, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in Mission Hospitals in Asheville after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at Whittier Church of God, of which she was a member.

The Revs. Ned Pressley and Cody Lambert officiated. Burial was in Union Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Bell, Jack Adams, Woodrow Culpepper, Roy Bryant, Jack Hundley and Chris Bailey.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Lettie Ann Foxx Bryson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Childers, who died March 2002; one sister, Elsie Barnes Roper; and one brother, Vel Dee Barnes.

Surviving are one daughter, Wanda Childers Jones of Whittier; two sisters, Alma Barnes Roper and Leona Barnes McDonald, both of Whittier; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Billy Wilson

W.J. "Billy" Wilson, Jr., 85, of Barber Hill Drive, Waynesville, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Sylva First United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Paul Christy officiated. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Oakdale Cemetery in Deland, Fla.

He was a native of Duval, Fla., and was in the theatre business most of his professional career. His last position was division manager for General Cinema Corp., now owned by AMC. After retiring from the motion picture business, he became a licensed building contractor in North Carolina. He was active in local community activities and spent many years volunteering for the Harris Regional Hospital.

Son of the late William James and Mackie Willie Hay Wilson, he was a member of the FMC Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneveive Kepler Wilson.

Surviving are two sons, William J. Wilson, III of Fairfax Station, Va., and Richard V. Wilson of Calabash; and two sisters, Patty Whittington of St. Augustine, Fla., and Margaret Blume of Flossmoor, Ill.

Vester Arnold

Vester "Coon" Arnold, 83, of 55 Arnold Hill, Sylva, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Haywood Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Rev. Wanda Moore officiated. Burial was in Parris Cemetery. Friends of the family served as pallbearers, with Robert Hampton and Thad Worley serving as honorary pallbearers.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired maintenance technician from Western Carolina University and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He received the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Son of the late John and Linnie Love Arnold, he was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by one granddaughter.

Surviving are four sons, Phil Howell, Sammy Howell, Ronald Howell and Donald Howell, all of Sylva; two daughters, Janice Williams of Roseboro and Gretta Worley of Sylva; and three grandsons.


Frances Ripley

Frances Lee Perry Ripley, 86, of Huntington, W.Va., died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Woodlands Health Care.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, at Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary. The Rev. Jim Harless officiated.

Born July 17, 1917, in Huntington, she was the daughter of the late Frank Lee and Dora Segelke Perry. She was a graduate of Marshall University and had worked for American Air Lines, U.S. Corps of Engineer, C&O Railroad and was a Cabell County school teacher. She was a member of Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church and a Golden Life member of the Woman's Club of Huntington.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Robert Perry and John Thomas Perry.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Daniel C. Ripley; two sons, Daniel Andrew Ripley of Kenova, W.Va., and John Russell Ripley of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Ann Elizabeth Ripley Gehring of Sylva; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church, the Huntington Museum of Art or the Cammack Children's Center.


John Wheeler

John Hamilton Wheeler, 88, of Bristol, Tenn., died Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held in Rowlesburg, W.Va., in the near future.

A native of Rowlesburg, he was a son of the late Guy Hamilton and Fay Carnes Wheeler. He graduated from Rowlesburg High School in 1933. He attended Davis and Elkins College and the University of West Virginia.

He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked on various projects throughout West Virginia. He then served as a pharmacist mate and laboratory technician in the U.S. Navy from 1936 until 1942.

Following his Navy discharge, he had a career as a pharmaceutical representative with Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co. in New York City and Long Island, New York. He retired to North Carolina in 1969 and moved to the Bristol area in 2000.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Berte H. Wheeler; two sisters, Claudia Hamilton and Jane Gildard; and one brother, Donald C. Wheeler.

Surviving are two sisters, Betty Heath of Sun City Center, Fla., and Ann Heaney of Augusta, Ga.

Sammy White

Sammy Lyle White, 53, of N.C. 107, Cashiers, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at his residence.
Private services and burial were held Friday, Jan. 9, in Salem, S.C.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he worked at Mayfair Mills as a machine operator. Son of Viola Bradley White of Cashiers and the late Henry White, he was a member of Salem Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert White; and one sister, Ruth Ann Rogers.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one daughter, Margaret Elaine White of Pickens, S.C.; and three brothers, Hall, John and William White, all of Cashiers.

Tolvin Brown

Tolvin V. Brown, 71, of Roy Tritt Road, Cullowhee, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2004, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Jeff Powell and Johnny Norris will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

A native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life, he was an electrician and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He was a son of the late Jess and Arlesia Queen Brown.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Johnny Brown.

Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Ada Inman Brown; one daughter, Nancy Childers of South Carolina; and one grandchild.

Dorothy Owle

Dorothy Pauline Owle, 76, of 32 Hundred Acre Tract, Whittier, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City.

The Rev. Ricky Stepp will officiate. Burial will be in Birdtown Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Gaston and Louisa Goforth Lambert.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Jack Owle; one daughter, Wanda Faye Owle; and two grandchildren.

Surviving are four daughters, Linda Kay Baxley of Dodd City, Texas, Joyce Ann Blankenship and Peggy Sue DeHart, both of Whittier, and Tina Clark of Cherokee; four sons, Samie Wayne Owle and Clifton McKinley Owle, both of Cherokee, and Richard Dennis Owle and Joseph Allen Owle, both of Whittier; three sisters, Mary Collins of Old Fort, and Rachel Hornbuckle and Nellie Lambert, both of Cherokee; three brothers, George Lambert, Sam Lambert and Joseph Lambert Jr., all of Cherokee; 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.


Bessie Long

Bessie Owle Long, 73, of Cherokee died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004.

The body was placed in Bethabara Baptist Church, of which she was a member, at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, and will await the service hour at 4 p.m. today (Thursday.) Burial will be in Birdtown Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ben and Dwayne Stamper, Albert and Tunney Crowe, Bill and Brian Waldroup, Curtis Arneach, Bob and Pete Long, Cos Hicks, Eddie DeHart and Eddie Paul.

She was a lifelong resident of the Birdtown community and worked for the Cherokee Central School System for a number of years. Daughter of the late Rev. Dee and Evie Owle, she was married for 53 years to the late Johnny Long.

Surviving are three sons, John D. Long, Jamie Long and Ray Long; one daughter, Alyne Stamper; three brothers, Paul Owle of Cherokee, Mack Owle of Linwood and Mike Owle of Earl; three sisters, Frances Arneach, Esther Waldroup and Liz Crowe, all of Cherokee; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

William Morgan

William Alvin Morgan, 77, of Council Circle, Sylva, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Revs. Rich Peoples and Mike Farmer will officiate. Burial will be in Lovedale Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, he worked at Mead Corp. for 29 years before moving to Montezuma, Ind., to work at Inland Paper Mill of Newport, Ind. for 15 years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in North Africa, Texas and Kansas and a son of the late Charlie Coleman and Gracie Hooper Morgan.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Charlie Morgan Jr., Jim Morgan and Gene Morgan.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Jessie Bryson Morgan; two daughters, Linda Reed of Cullowhee and Joyce Brooks of Sylva; two brothers, Sim Morgan and Jerry Morgan, both of Sylva; one sister, Gazelle Keefer of Sylva; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice, 132 Plaza Sylva, N.C. 28779.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
