Shame on those who abandon their petsTo the Editor:This letter is to the coward who abandoned his or her three dogs on the corner of N.C. 107 and Webster Road on the weekend of July 22.Shame on you! Those dogs sat there for days, waiting patiently for you to come back for them. When all hope was starting to fade for these gentle and faithful creatures, strangers banded together to help. There was a great effort to help save these three dogs. Two were lucky and are safe and awaiting new homes. Their rescuers are kind people, but they have their own responsibilities and are unable to keep them. One was so frightened that he ran away from his companions and is now lost and alone. How does that make you feel? It makes me sad and angry and sick. Shame on you and anyone else who does such a cowardly and cruel act. Jeannie Zuk Webster |

More moratoriums, pleaseTo the Editor:There was an interesting concept brought up in a letter to the editor last week. Some guy wants the commissioners to do something about all the bulldozing activity going on.Doesn't this idea work perfectly with the current notions of the vocal minoirty? Do we really need the better service and lower prices that a new asphalt plant would likely bring? Do all the cell phone users really need the better service new towers could provide? Let's just place a moratorium on bulldozers and stop all of this madness. And if it's not too much trouble, I'd like to see a new moratorium on convenience stores. Does anybody really need the improved choices, convenience and competition that a new facility can bring? Let's get control of this free enterprise system while we still can. Just one more thing. There are entirely too many real estate brokers in this area. What we really need is more plumbers. Hey, wait a minute. Can't we make some of these brokers be plumbers. That's what the communist people do, and just look how happy they are. Insincerely yours, Mike Clark Cullowhee |

Writer's letter indicates prejudiceTo the Editor:In reference to last week's letter, Mr. Tice, you have referred to me as a parasite using a bulldozer to descrate the mountains and hill sides. If it weren't for a bulldozer, you would not be living in your home. Since you have a home, should other folks not have the same opportunity? I think everyone should have the right to home ownership. I offered to sell the PeeWee Place property before I began developing it, but I had no buyers. This restricted, doublewide development has two-lane roads, concrete ditches, underground utilities and landscaping, all of which has upgraded the neighborhood. Doublewide trailers are in demand due to the Jackson County economy. My developments are just giving folks an opportunity to own a home without a big price tag. Obviously you haven't considered that not everyone can afford to buy a $198,000 home, and your negative opinion regarding middle-class people in this county has been read by all. If you have a problem living next to my development, maybe you should consider relocating to an area where you consider the people to be of the same high caliber as you. I understand if you don't wish to mingle with people you consider to be inferior. Wayne Smith Sylva |
