Let's not be pawnsTo the Editor:Outside-of-this-area developers will destroy Jackson County. Their ruthlessness knows no bounds, and they will turn us against each other for the sake of a quick and easy profit, a profit that will never be spent in this county. They will use us in any way possible, particularly by turning our independence against our own best interests. They will use our natural and normal dislike of outside authority to oppose anything that would help us stand together to oppose their threat. They will use us as pawns to fight against any sort of planning that would slow their cancerous growth. They will use us as pawns to oppose any sort of "transfer tax" by claiming that it is just another government intrusion on our lives. They will use us as pawns to oppose any ordinance that would keep them from exploiting us to the fullest. These outside developers want us to be divided so that they can pick us off - one at a time - like shooting so many fish in a barrel, one 50-acre farm at a time. Know your enemies. Know their lies and their manipulation. Do not let ourselves be used by turning our natural inclinations against us. Planning can be done by residents of a community - community-based planning as opposed to a central, external government. A transfer tax is paid by a land purchaser and can be written so as not to be levied on family transfers. The only ones who would whine are the profiteers and outside developers. The outside developers are counting on us reacting in a knee-jerk fashion to sensible and protective measures. They want us to be divided and independent. We cannot let them destroy our county. Let's not be pawns in their game. Patrick Holleman Sylva
HRH provides excellent careTo the Editor:I wish to thank so very much the doctors, nurses and employees at Harris Regional Hospital for the care I received while in the ICU. They pulled me up by the boot straps with such kindness and loving care. Then, when I went on the floor, I was treated equally well, and I met so many wonderful people.Mary E. Robertson Bryson City
Jones for 14th Division highwayTo the Editor:With the inauguration of Gov. Mike Easley behind us, the governor now has the important task of filling several key positions across the state. One of particular importance to this part of the state is the appointment of a Department of Transportation Highway commissioner for Division 14.Over the past several years, we have had excellent people to serve in this capacity from Cherokee, Graham, Haywood, Swain and other counties, but there has been no one from Jackson County to service as a highway commissioner since the 1950s. Marion Jones from Jackson County has agreed to accept this position if the governor calls on him to do so. Marion has an impeccable reputation in the district attorney's office and has served Western North Carolina well for many years. He has been recommended by the 11th Congressional Democrat Party chairs, the Sylva Town Board and each District Court judge from the western counties. In addition, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners recently adopted a resolution urging Gov. Easley to select his next highway commissioner from Jackson County. For certain, the people of Western North Carolina would be fortunate if Gov. Easley appoints Marion Jones as highway commissioner for Division 14. Eddie Madden Chairman Jackson County Democrat Party
