This postcard features a real photograph of Sylva’s Main Street and is believed to have been taken during the late 1930s. Signs visible include Lyric Theatre (now Big Rick’s), Park Lunch Room (now Tuckasegee Beauty Shop and part of Vance Hardware), Velt’s Cafe (now Lulu’s on Main), Sylva Pharmacy Rexall (now Hollifield Jewelers), Sylva Army Store (now vacant at Main and Spring streets). The Army Store was earlier G.M. Cole & Company, and that sign is also visible. The card is labeled “Cline” and numbered 1-O-39. The Sylva Herald publishes either a “Then and Now” or “Back Then” feature on a weekly basis. Readers who have photos taken in Jackson County that are at least 25 years old and include a recognizable feature (such as an existing building, highway, mountaintop or ridgeline) are invited to submit them for use in “Then and Now.” Other interesting photos will be considered for “Back Then.” Photos may be mailed or dropped by the newspaper office. As a convenience to our readers, Herald photographer Nick Breedlove will scan photos Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 10 and 11 a.m. Those with questions about potential “Then and Now” or “Back Then” photos may contact Breedlove at 586-2611, ext. 310, or nick@thesylvaherald.com. – Courtesy of The North Carolina Collection, University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill
