Erwin defeated Smoky Mountain 7-1 in Western Athletic Conference softball action Friday at Erwin.
"They got a lot of base hits although on some of them we could have run up and made the catch," Coach Melissa Hill said. "Later in the game they were putting it in places we couldn't get to." Catie Edwards opened the bottom of the first with a double opening the way for the Lady Warriors to score the only two runs they would need. Run-scoring singles by Edwards in the second and Jerri Crawford in the third extended the margin to 4-0. Lou Kemp's triple and Ginny Brown's single drove in runs in the Erwin fourth. Another run scored on an error for a 7-0 advantage. The Lady Mustangs (7-7, 2-4) got on the board in the seventh. Tori Kelly singled, stole second and moved to third on an infield out. Amber Stephens walked, and the duo pulled off a double steal with Kelly crossing the plate. Edwards, Crawford and Brown all were two of three to pace Erwin. |

Laura Franklin pitched the first four innings to pick up the win.
Stephens was two of three at the plate for SM. Hill said Stephens pitched a solid game. Although she gave up 10 hits, she walked no one while striking out three. "We need to get focused and figure out what our goal for the rest of the season is going to be," Hill said. The Lady Mustang JVs fell to 2-7 with a 9-5 home loss to Erwin. Natalie Cantler had an RBI single in the third. A two-run homer by Danielle Bowers along with a wild pitch tied the game 4-4 in the sixth, but the Lady Warriors scored five times in the seventh. Jennifer Hyatt singled in a run for SM in the bottom of the seventh. "That's the best game we've played all year," Coach Barry Stevens said. "We're starting to look like a team now."
