Historical societies sponsor tour of National Register sites |

A tour of Jackson County properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the next in a series of events planned by local historical societies to commemorate the county's 150th birthday.
Joe Rhinehart of Webster will lead the Wednesday, Aug. 8, event. Participants will meet at 10 a.m. at the Balsam Mountain Inn for coffee, and then proceed to most of the remaining sites. The program is free, but participants will be responsible for their own lunch at the Jarrett House in Dillsboro. Enrollment is limited to 25. Reservations may be made by calling Rhinehart at 586-0921. |

Jackson County has 15 properties listed on the National Register. They are Balsam Mountain Inn in Balsam; Jackson County Courthouse and the Hooper House in Sylva; the Jarrett House in Dillsboro; Webster High School, Webster United Methodist Church, Webster Baptist Church, Moore House, Hedden House and Hall House in Webster; High Hampton Inn and Country Club, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and Zachary-Tolbert House in Cashiers; Camp Merrie-Woode in Sapphire; and Backus Lodge near Lake Toxaway.
Backus Lodge will not be included on the Aug. 8 tour.
