Jackson's Industrial Park may need to expand, Boyd Sossamon told the Jackson County Economic Development Council Monday night.
Sossamon chairs the EDC's Business and Industry Committee, which has been considering that prospect. "We're working on a proposal now to Jackson Development Corp. that may recommend acquiring land adjacent to the current Whittier facility," he said. In other expansion news, EDC Chair Tom McClure said he is working with Region A on the proposed Entrepreneurial Center for Jackson County. "We're developing a proposal to ask the Economic Development Association for $1.5 million," McClure said. Noting the rather large sum, McClure added, "If you don't ask for it, you don't get it." McClure also said that Orkand will vacate the former Buster Brown plant by the end of this month, and that he is working with a client who may be interested in moving into that facility. In other moves, Sue Bumgarner, executive director of the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber will be moving from its current location. The new location will be the log cabin on U.S. 64 West, across from Bond Builders Supply. Several individuals are still working on a private proposal to expand sewer to the Cashiers Sewer District, she reported. "It's not a dead issue; something needs to be resolved," she said of the moratorium on sewer expansion for that area. As one alternative a committee has been formed to discuss incorporation of the Cashiers community and the chamber does have a member on that committee, she told the EDC. "But the way the laws have changed, I don't see incorporation happening any time soon," she said. Bumgarner announced that the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet will be held Nov. 9 a High Hampton. The Cashiers Christmas Parade is set for 2 p.m. Dec. 2. Jackson County Chamber Director Julie Spiro urged EDC board members to personally invite their industries and manufacturers to the annual appreciation dinner, which has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, at Lulu's on Main. |
