Polls scheduled to open today in Cherokee Tribal Council elections

Polls were scheduled to opened at 6 a.m. today (Thursday) and will remain open until 6 p.m. for Cherokee Tribal Council elections.

Each of Cherokeešs six communities will select two candidates to serve on the 12-member Tribal Council. Turnout is expected to be light since the positions of chief and vice chief are not up for election this year, an elections official said.

Following are the candidates:

Birdtown: Dan McCoy, Albert D. Crowe, Sandy Maples Bradley and Jim Owle

Wolfetown: Carroll Parker, Robert Ewell Long, Dwayne A. Jackson, Larry Blythe

Painttown: Tommye Saunooke, Marie L. Junaluska, George V. Sneed Sr., Dennis Edward "Bill" Taylor

Yellowhill: Bob Blankenship, Richard "Twidge" Welch, Alan B. Ensley, Yahnie Squirrel

Big Cove: Teresa Bradley McCoy, Richard Panther, Francine R. Watty, Jack Lossiah

Cherokee County/Snowbird: Glenda Sanders, Brenda Long-Norville, Jim Bowman, Abe Wachacha

School board elections are also being held in the Birdtown, Wolfetown and Big Cove communities.

Results will be announced tonight at Tribal Council offices.
