Hall takes prize in Herald football contest

Tanner Hall of Sylva is the winner of The Sylva Herald’s second football contest of the season.

His guess of 38 points in the East Henderson vs Smoky Mountain tie-breaker game gave him the win as four entrants correctly predicted the outcome of 15 of the 20 games.

SM won the game 28-10 for a total of 38 points.

Other entrants with five misses had tie-breaker guesses of 42, 42 and 62 points. Overall, guesses ranged from 31-63.

Like 85 percent of the 104 who entered this week’s contest, Hall went with Notre Dame, a 22-16 loser to Michigan State.

He was among the 63 percent of entrants who failed to predict Stanford’s 18-14 win over BYU.

His other misses were picking Duke, a 28-10 loser to Northwestern; Georgia Tech, a 39-3 loser to Clemson; and Florida, a 24-10 loser to Tennessee.

Western Carolina, a 28-21 winner over The Citadel, was the choice of 30 percent of those entering.
Results of other games in last week’s contest included:

Appalachian State over Morehead State (24-21); Elon over East Tennessee (14-0); Gardner-Webb over Chattanooga (22-12); Furman over Richmond (31-17); Wofford over Georgia Southern (20-18); Wisconsin over UNC (38-27); N.C.
