Orange and gold cosmos (and a few stalks of purple ironweed) provide dazzling fall floral color along N.C. 107 near Cullowhee Valley School. Planted as part of the N.C. Department of Transportation's wildflower program, the bright cosmos are generally grown in conjunction with spring-blooming poppies, said Rick Queen, a roadside environmental engineer with the local DOT, and bloom from mid-September until frost.
