Town voters to have choices in fall elections

By Carey Phillips

Sylva voters will have a choice for town board members in the November 6 election while those in Forest Hills will see of rematch of a 2005 mayoral battle that finished in a dead heat.

That’s the result of filing which closed Friday for offices in the two municipalities.

With three seats open on Sylva’s board, incumbents Danny Allen, Ray Lewis and Maurice Moody all filed for re-election.

Challengers are Sylva Fire Chief Mike Beck and Downtown Sylva Association Director Sarah Graham.

Forest Hills Mayor Jim Davis is again being challenged by board member Sue Burton. Their race ended tied two years ago with Davis winning on a coin flip.

Newcomers Suzanne Stone and Gene Tweedy are the lone candidates for the two seats on the Forest Hills board.

Burton is giving up her board seat to run for mayor, and Joe Rossano did not file for re-election.

The deadline to register for the non-partisan election is Oct. 12.

Absentee voting by mail will begin Oct. 5 with one-stop voting starting Oct. 18.
