DOWNTOWN SYLVA’S next “Art After Dark” on Friday, Aug. 3, will include a 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. opening reception for an exhibit by Sylva Herald “Across the Mountains” photographers Nick Breedlove and Scott Hotaling in the gallery of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. The show will include images from the recent Herald magazine as well as some of their other recent work. “Art After Dark” event are held on the first Friday of each month and feature extended hours at downtown galleries and other businesses. Check next week’s newspaper for more information on participating galleries and exhibits.

WRITER ANN MELTON of Waynesville has recently completed a fictionalized account of her experiences growing up in Jackson County. Titled “A Place Called Home,” the novel revolves around a Sylva doctor and the people he comes into contact with each day. Melton said she used many personal experiences – along with those of her family and friends – to shape the book’s events. A reading and book signing is planned next month at City Lights Bookstore. “A Place Called Home” is Melton’s first book; she assisted her father, with “My CCC Days,” a 2006 account of his experiences in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE could use some help on recruiting a few good volunteers for the Tour de Tuck, a bicycle race set for Saturday, Sept. 22. No experience is necessary. Chamber Director Julie Spiro said they are specifically looking for volunteers to assist with aid stations – just handing out water and snacks to riders as they come by the stations. Anyone interested in volunteering can call Spiro at 586-2155. “It really isn’t a difficult job – we just need a few willing souls,” Spiro said.
THE SECOND ANNUAL DOWNTOWN DOG WALK to benefit Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation will be held in Waynesville on Saturday, Aug. 11. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the walk will start at 10 a.m. from the Haywood County Courthouse lawn. Following the walk, there will be games, doggie contests, a quilt raffle, vendors and more. Dog/walker teams are encouraged to pre-register but they can sign up the day of the walk. For the registration fee of $15, each team will receive a goody bag and doggy bandana. An additional $15 donation earns the walker a free official Dog Walk T-shirt. THE JACKSON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE is seeking information about a Sunday, June 24, Canada community house robbery that occurred at approximately 4 a.m. (When this notice appeared in last week’s paper, the time was incorrectly listed as 4 p.m.) According to Capt. Steve Lillard, the thieves broke out the glass in the front door, entered the home and took a number of items. Anyone who observed anything suspicious is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 586-8901 or call the CrimeStoppers Hotline at 631-1125.

A VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA CHAPTER is being formed in Western North Carolina. More than 50 Vietnam veterans from Jackson, Swain and Macon Counties have already joined. All Vietnam veterans (men and women) that live in any Western North Carolina county are invited to join this new VVA chapter, which will be headquartered in Franklin. The monthly meetings will rotate between Jackson, Macon and Swain counties on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. The next meeting will be Thursday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Swain County Administration Building in Bryson City. The October meeting will be in Sylva. Those attending for the first time are asked to bring two copies of your DD form 214 and $20 for the first year’s dues.
