Lynn Hotaling - Editor
Lynn brings 25-plus years of newspaper experience to the Herald’s newsroom. In addition to editing and page design, she covers the Sheriff’s Office and Airport Authority and assists with breaking news, writes editorials and authors the Ruralite Cafe, a weekly column about local people and places. A Georgia native, Hotaling has lived in Jackson County since 1970 and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Carolina University.

Carey Phillips - Sports Editor/Assistant Editor
Carey has been employed at the Herald since 1982. In addition to covering local sports, he assists with copy editing and reports the Sylva Police Department and Jackson County court system. A lifelong resident of Jackson County, he is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Justin Goble - Reporter/Feature writer
Justin, who joined The Herald staff in July 2005, covers Jackson County commissioners, the Economic Development Commission, the town of Webster, Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority and the Library Board. He also coordinates The Herald’s Newspapers in Education initiative. Originally from Lenoir, he hold’s a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass commiunication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Margo Gray - Advertising Manager
Margo, an award-winning advertising designer, has been with The Sylva Herald for most of her professional life. She heads four-person staff that strives to create attention-grabbing ads that generate business for the newspaper’s customers. She holds a degree in art from Western Carolina University.

Jan Extine - Advertising Representative
A native of Jackson County, Jan has been with The Herald since 1984. She began her design career in pre-press work for The Herald’s print shop and transferred to advertising in 1991. She holds a degree in advertising design from Southwestern Community College and also attended WCU.

Sherry Peek - Advertising Representative
Sherry joined The Herald in 2002. In addition to advertising sales and design, she assists with pagination. She holds a degree in advertising and graphic design from Southwestern Community College.

Ginger Roberson - Advertising Representative
Ginger, who joined The Herald’s advertising department in 2006, has more than five years of newspaper experience. She holds a degree in commercial art and advertising from Southwestern Community College.

Jeff Harlow - Printing sales and design
Jeff joined The Herald staff in 1986 and oversees offset printing jobs. He designs brochures, business cards, menus and other custom printing jobs. He holds a degree in commercial art/graphic design from Southwestern Community College.

Cindy Turpin - Classified pages/Real estate ads/Typesetter
Cindy, who has been with The Herald since 1990, assists with design and layout of printing projects in addition to her newspaper advertising duties.

Kelly Timco - Printing sales
Kelly, who was part of the newspaper’s advertising staff for five years, moved to the print shop in 2005. He assists The Herald’s printing customers in designing business cartd and other custom-printing jobs.

Nick Breedlove - Webmaster/Design
Nick joined the staff in 2003. He provides computer tech support and designs and maintains this Web site. An award-winning photographer, he captures images for the newspaper. He also designs classified display and real estate ads and assists with print shop and color copying jobs. Breedlove attended Western Carolina University.

Art Altman (no e-mail) – Accounts Receivable
Art, who has lived in Jackson County since 1976, is responsibile for billing and recording payments to the newspaper and print shop. He holds a degree from WCU.
