Betty Jennings
Betty Angel Jennings, 74, of Franklin, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville, after a battle with cancer.
Services were held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 20, in the chapel of Bryant Funeral Home with the Revs. Steve Reeves and Alton Dendy officiating.
A private burial will be held at Wells Grove Baptist Church Cemetery at a later date. Honorary pallbearers will be brothers and grandsons.
A native and lifelong resident of Macon County, she was a daughter of the late William Grover and Evelyn Earley Angel. She was married for 48 years to Paul Jackson Jennings, who died in 2002. She retired from Belden of Franklin in 1996 after 30 years of service.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by one brother, James Howard Angel.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Jennings of Franklin and Gloria Lowrey of Winston Salem; one sister, Madge Salter of Brevard; and four brothers, Kenneth Angel of Etowah, Earl Angel of Gastonia, Don Angel of Little River, S.C., and Gene Angel of Fort Myers, Fla.; and two grandsons.

Mont Hall
Mont Candler Hall, 80, of Lyman, Wash., died Friday, July 13, 2007, at his residence.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Lyman Cemetery.
He was born April 19, 1927, in Jackson County’s Greens Creek community, he moved to Lyman in 1948. He worked for Lone Star Cement in concrete for 21 years and later for Scott Paper driving a logging truck for 15 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. He was a son of the late Felix and Lula Ashe Hall.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and Wade Hall, and a sister Mary Bishop.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Doris Deitz Hall; three sons, Larry Hall of Toronto, Canada, Michael Hall of Sedro-Wooley, Wash., and Neil Hall of Lyman; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Inez Hurst of Franklin, and Irene Bishop and Vera Cope, both of Sylva.
Memorials may be made to Lyman Cemetery Fund.
Bess Croci
Bess Allman Croci, 75, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Thursday, June 7, 2007, at her home after a brief battle with lung cancer.
She was a native of Sylva, but moved to Washington, D.C., and later to Las Vegas upon her retirement. She was a daughter of the late John H. Allman and Mamie Bumgarner Allman.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, J.H. Allman and Harry Eugene Allman.
Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Elmo John Croci; one daughter, Gina Marie Croci of Las Vegas; and two sisters, Margaret Warren of Canton and Helen Deitz of Sylva.

Sheila Cowan
Sheila Kirchberg Cowan, 69, of Asheville, died Friday, July 13, 2007, at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Raleigh after multiple complications from diabetes.
A family graveside service was held at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Stillwell Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Roy W. Kirchberg and Geneva Tate Kirchberg. She was a retired registered nurse from St. Joseph’s Hospital and a member of Biltmore Church of Christ.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Danny L. Cowan Sr.
Surviving are two sons, Danny L. Cowan Jr. of Asheville, and Lee Cowan of Raleigh; one daughter, Paige Cowan of Raleigh; three brothers; and two grandsons.

Nancy Bottorf
Nancy Jane Foust Bottorf, 62, of Whittier died Friday, July 20, 2007.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Cherokee Bible Church with Pastor Randy Miller officiating.
Burial was in Swain Memorial Cemetery.
Born May 8, 1945, in Toledo, Ohio, she worked more than 25 years for the Cherokee Reservation Schools.
Surviving are her husband, Butch; two daughters, Gena Messick and Lisa Murphy; and two grandchildren.

David Fox
David Lee Fox, 85, of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, Wash.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 23, at Greenhills Memorial Cemetery in Burlington, Wash., with the Rev. John Batts officiating.
He was born April 5, 1922, in Franklin, to the late James Henry and Lavada Houston Fox. He was raised and attended school in North Carolina. After marrying Martha Browning July 14, 1945, in Clayton, Ga., they made their home in South Carolina, Washington and Michigan before settling in Sedro-Woolley in 1955.
A member of the International Association of Machinists, he worked for Skagit Steel (Bendix) for more than 35 years before retiring in 1993. He enjoyed hiking in the Cascade Mountains.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Stanley; three brothers, Leeman, Elisha and Lossen Fox; and three sisters, Eleanor Cairns, Elva Crunkleton and Elda Gossnel.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Martha; one son, Steve Fox, of Sedro-Woolley; and two grandsons.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Clear Lake, Wash.

Walt Williams
Walter Wilson “Walt” Williams, 57, of Joe Davis Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, July 9, 2007, in Panguitch Lake, Utah.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in the picnic pavilion area at Western Carolina University.
A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Walter Williams and Ruby Davis Williams. He was a long-haul truck driver for 13 years. He enjoyed cooking, baseball, home renovations, traveling, television, movies, computers and the Internet.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Louise Williams; and two brothers, Harold and Charles Williams.
Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Nancy McGinnis Williams; two daughters, Thelmalina W. Jackson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mikal W. Denny of Edmond, Okla.; one sister, Barbara W. Jaynes of Canton; one brother, Robert L. Williams of Sylva; and six grandchildren.
Louetta “Lou” Nicholson
Louetta H. “Lou” Nicholson of Sylva, died Thursday, July 19, 2007, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Paul Christy and Robert Hopper officiating.
Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
She was born in Hickory and had lived in Jackson County since the age of 18. She was a retired educator from Scotts Creek Elementary School for 30 years, and was assistant principal and principal of Smokey Mountain Elementary School for 10 years.
The daughter of the late Jessie Propst Huffman and Lee J.M. Huffman, she was also preceded in death by her husband, James N. Nicholson, who died in 1978; three sisters, Edna Whitworth, Louise Beach and Anita Morris; and two brothers, L.C. and Ervin Huffman.
Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Ginn of Sylva, and Terri Morgan of Maggie Valley; two sisters, Larue Isenhour of Hickory, and Nellie Jean Robertson of Newton; one brother, Dolan Huffman, of Hickory; and four grandchildren.

Doris Jones
Doris Wilson Jones, 65, of Sylva’s Savannah Community, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, July 26) in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Josh Hyde, Eddie Stillwell and Floyd Jones officiating.
Burial will be in Hyatts Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Buchanan, Eugene Norman, Carl Trantham, Tim Brown, John Agoo and Lynon Kirkendall.
The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
A native of Jackson County where she had lived most of her life, she was an avid gardener, canner and cook. She was a member of Speedwell Baptist Church and attended Calvary Baptist Church for a number of years. She was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Bessie Ashe Wilson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Jones, who died in 1995; one son, Randall Shane Jones; three brothers, Howard, Ray and Herbert Wilson; and an infant sibling.
Surviving are two daughters, Tammy Jones of Sylva and Karen Jones of the home; one son, Dustin Jones of Sylva; seven sisters, Janice Truett, Jean Trantham and Faye Medford, all of Dallas, Nell Norman of Hendersonville, Margaret Brown of Woodruff, S.C., Alice Wykle of Ashton, Idaho, and Helen Moore of High Point; one brother, Charles Wilson of Sylva; and two grandchildren.

Donald L. Reed, 62, of Cherokee’s Wolfetown community died Thursday, July 19, 2007, at his residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Carson and Cody Lambert officiating.
Burial was in the Reed Family Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Martha Reed Bark. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Qualla Chapel. He was formerly employed as a maintenance mechanic at Cherokee Indian Hospital.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan La Donna Reed.
Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Treva Hicks Reed; two sons, Dewayne Hicks and Dwayne Jackson, both of Cherokee; six sisters, Genevieve Lambert, Ruby Teesateskie, Diane Bark and Roberta Bark, all of Cherokee, and Thelma Bark and Velma Tafoya, both of New Mexico; one brother, Goodlow Bark of Cherokee; and four grandchildren.
