DeGraffenreid plays in East-West contest

Playing in her final high school basketball game, former Smoky Mountain point guard Cetera DeGraffenreid scored nine points in last week’s East-West All-Star Game at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Other than four practices leading up to the game, it was the first basketball played by DeGraffenreid in nearly four months after dislocating her right thumb in a national all-star game.

“It was OK for getting out there after four months, but it wasn’t the greatest,” DeGraffenreid said of her performance.”

She said the injury is doing much better.

DeGraffenreid’s West team had a 55-43 lead through three quarters before the East exploded in the final period and won 75-67.

“We were up by 12, and they came back on us,” she said. “They started playing harder than we were, and we started slacking off.”

After an All-American high school career that culminated in a state championship for the Lady Mustangs, DeGraffenreid is preparing for her first college season at North Carolina. She’s already in Chapel Hill and enrolled in summer school.

“Things are going good,” she said. “Classes are a lot different, but other than that it’s going great.”
