Wanda Forrest
Wanda Hasell Forrest, 55, of Cullowhee, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at her residence, from complications of multiple sclerosis.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at East LaPorte Park, with the Rev. Michael Hudson officiating.
She was born in Wilmington on Feb. 8, 1951, and had resided in Jackson County since 1977. She received a bachelor’s degree in child development from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a master’s degree in education with a concentration in mental retardation at Western Carolina University, and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. From 1977 until 1992, she taught exceptional children in the Jackson County public school system. She began Jackson County Schools’ program for serving children with severe and profound disabilities.
Surviving are her parents, Mary and Tom Hasell of New Bern; her husband of 32 years, Craig Forrest; two sisters, Jo Hasell of Gainesville, Fla., and Meg Clouser of New Bern; and one brother, Tim Hasell of Raleigh.

Ray McMahan
Ray McMahan, 54, of West Piney Mountain Road, Whittier, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at his residence.

Furman Cogdill
Furman Lee Cogdill, 76, of Newport News, Va., formerly of Jackson County’s Addie community, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, in a VA hospital in Hampton, Va., after a brief illness.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veteran’s Cemetery in Suffolk, Va., with the Rev. Marshall Mason officiating.
A son of the late John Will Cogdill and Ada Adams Cogdill, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served in the Korean War. He had graduated from Sylva High School and Western Carolina University, and received a law degree with honors from William and Mary College. He was a member of Ivy Farms Baptist Church, the American Legion and Moose Lodge #1117.
Surviving are one son, David Lee Cogdill of Newport News; one daughter, Sharon Johnson of Charlotte; two brothers, Eugene Cogdill of Sylva and Frank Cogdill of Balsam Grove; three sisters, Betty Cogdill, Lou Fisher and Sue Caldwell, all of Sylva; and two grandchildren.
Mack Bryson
Mack Turner Bryson, 82, of Franklin, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at his residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Reeves officiating. Burial followed in Old Salem Methodist Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Rick Pendergrass, Dwayne Blackwell, Ted Picklesimer, Kenneth Houston, Mack Stanfield, Mike Bryson, Landy Pendergrass and Tom Williams. Honorary pallbearers were Billy Blackwell and Zach Picklesimer.
A native of Macon County, he was a son of the late Sam and Olive Pierson Bryson. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II and served in Samoa, Guadalcanal and New Zealand. He received the Presidential Unit Citation. He retired from General Motors in Ypsilanti, Mich., in 1991.
He was preceded in death by one son, Douglas Bryson; and three brothers, Sam Bryson, Vernon Bryson and Alton Bryson.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Keener Bryson; four daughters, Gayle Pendergrass and Elayne Long, both of Franklin, Rosalyn Bond of Jacksonville, Ark., and Jerri Williams of Temple, Ga.; one son, Rick Bryson of Sylva; one sister, Otela Bryson of Asheville; one brother, Wiley Bryson of Franklin; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Stephen Bryson
Stephen Edward Bryson, 59, of Shiloh Church Road, Roxboro, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006 at his residence after a long illness.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Mill Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Tammy Robertson, Brian Hager and Benjamin Gauld officiating.
A native of Jackson County, he was a son of Maybell B. Reed of Bryson City and the late Thurman Bryson. He served as a specialist in the U.S. Army and was a retired millwright.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Fred Reed.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Nancy J. Bryson; two sons, James E. Bryson of Roxboro and William S. Bryson of Dade County, Fla.; three daughters, Jennifer Bryson of Riverton, Wy., Dawn McCall of Rosman and Susan Babir of Greenville, S.C.; one brother, Ernest O. Bryson of Sylva; two sisters, Pamela Bryson of Bryson City and Robin Bryson of Sylva; and six grandchildren.

Otis Dillard
Otis E. Dillard, 60, of Buffalo Road, Robbinsville, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at his residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Carden officiating. Burial was in Addie Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Howard Parris, Gordon Patrizio, Tim Shuler, Lewis Nicholson, Cameron Cochran and Jimmy Parris.
A native of Transylvania County, he had lived in Robbinsville for 19 years and was a son of the late Wayne and Lillian Daves Dillard. He was a fiber-optic cable specialist with Harrison McBarney and a member of Wilkesdale Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam and was a farmer and an avid outdoorsman.
Surviving are one son, Christopher Dillard of Ft. Mill, S.C.; and two grandchildren.
Robert Woody
Robert R. Woody Sr., 73, of Murphy, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Murphy First Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Hill officiating.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 at Western Carolina State Veterans’ Cemetery in Black Mountain. Honorary pallbearers include members of Murphy First Baptist Church’s Progressive Sunday school class and Fred Heath.
A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late Lawrence L. and Bertie Mae Collins Woody. He had lived in Asheville before moving to Murphy in 1961 as manager of the Coca-Cola warehouse. He later worked at and retired from the local telephone company. He had served in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany, and was an avid outdoorsman and woodcarver. He was a member of Murphy First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, captain of the ushers and president of the Progressive Sunday school class.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Bonnie W. Weatherman; and four brothers, Frank Woody, Fred Woody, Jack Woody and Jerry Woody.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Judie Ellis Woody; two daughters, Lisa Towe of Sylva and Jennifer Cable of Murphy; one son, Robert R. Woody, Jr. of Warsaw, Poland; two sisters, Elizabeth W. Oxner of Gladstone, Va., and Judy W. White of Columbia, S.C.; three brothers, Elmer Woody of Asheville, Kelly Woody of Altamont Springs, Fla., and Lawrence L. Woody, Jr. of Alexander; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Odis Allison
Odis William Allison, 79, of Calvary Church Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at his residence after an extended illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec 2, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Dennis Burrell and Roger Stewman officiating. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mike Allison, Eddie Orr, Kevin Gibson, Timothy Croom, Bruce Brooks and Ricky Allison. Honorary pallbearers were Glenn Allison, David Bowers, Johnny Brooks and Bob Middleton.
A native of Jackson County, where he had lived most of his life, he was a son of the late Charlie Andrew and Annie Deitz Allison. He had worked as a prison guard and later retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation in the maintenance department. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he had served as deacon, choir director and trustee.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Delia Reed, Lessie Bryson, Margaret Allison and Mary Brooks.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ruby Gibson Allison; one daughter, Cathey Allison Ashe of Sylva; one son, Andrew Allison of Tuckasegee; one sister, Elba Rudder of Sylva; two brothers, Glenn Allison and Howard Allison, both of Sylva; and four grandchildren.

Glana Holden
Glana Ruth Russell Holden, 67, of Bay Minette, Ala., formerly of Glenville, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at her residence.
Services were held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tommy Holden officiating. Burial will be in Stewart Cemetery in Cashiers.
She was a daughter of Jeff Russell and Lucille Moore Russell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenyon D. Holden, Sr.
Surviving are two sons, Kenyon D. Holden, Jr., and Jerry M. Holden, both of Albany, Ga.; two daughters, Treasa Watson of Bay Minette and Brenda Holden of Albany; one brother, James W. Russell of White Oak; two sisters, Ella Mae Houston of Franklin and Vergia Rae Thomas of Young Harris, Ga.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Robert Gentry
Robert M. Gentry, 74, of Wicker Road, Sylva, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at his residence after a brief illness.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 7) at Balsam Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Johnny Swanger and Johnny Norris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family was scheduled to receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, where the body will remain until being placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Daniel Mark and Nellie Wood Gentry. He had lived in Jackson County most of his life and was a veteran of the U.S. Army who had served in Korea. An accomplished musician, he enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music and had appeared on the Grand Ole Opry.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.
Surviving are three sons, Joe Gentry of Cherokee, David Gentry of Sylva, and Johnny Gentry of Waynesville; one sister, Vestie Woods of Candler; one brother, Daniel Mark Gentry, Jr. of Sylva; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Danny McMahan
Danny George McMahan, 54, of East Hometown Place, Dillsboro, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at his residence after an extended illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at Wayside Baptist Church, with the Revs. Fred Watkins Jr. and Steve Connor officiating. Burial was in Barkers Creek Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Adam Conner, Roy Nations, Pete Mathis, Adam Young, Chris Hayes and Buddy Price.
A native of Union, S.C., he was a son of Louise Wylkie McMahan of Sylva and the late Garland McMahan. He had lived in Jackson County most of his life and attended Wayside Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Olin McMahan and Ted McMahan, and one sister, Maggie McMahan.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Libby Shuler McMahan; two sons, Terry Daniel McMahan and David Craig McMahan, both of the home; one stepson, Carl Lane Bryant, Jr. of Dillsboro; one stepdaughter, Heather Anne Bryant of Bryson City; two sisters, Rosie Lee Bowers and Bernell Carter, both of Whittier; five brothers, Doug McMahan and Huey McMahan, both of Whitter, Billy McMahan of Montana, Dickie McMahan of Sylva and Jerry McMahan of Cullowhee; and one grandson.

Jennings Tucker
Jennings M. Tucker, 88, of Walhalla, S.C., formerly of Jackson County, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Pine Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with Phil Sanders and the Revs. Johnny Norris and Wesley Hooper officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army.
Pallbearers were Joey McGuffin, Ligon Gibson, Phil Sanders, Cody Sanders, John Lee Tucker and Chris Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Martin and James Crenshaw.
A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Rev. John Milas and Hattie Moody Tucker. He grew up in Jackson County and had lived in South Carolina for 41 years. He had worked as a logger and farmer, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an avid hunter.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Opal Norris Tucker; two daughters, Patricia Gibson of Westminster, S.C., and Janice McGuffin of Walhalla; one sister, Jimmie T. Sutton of Sylva; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Sally Tucker
Sally Irene Green Tucker, 85, of Cullowhee, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at her residence.
Services will be held at 5 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 7), in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Brown Cemetery, with the Rev. Hughie Stafford officiating.
She was a daughter of the late Robert Slagle Green and Sallie Hunter Green. She taught in the Broward County (Fla.) School system for more than 30 years and was a member of the Broward County Teachers Association. She was an organist, artist, gardener and decorator and enjoyed traveling around the world.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Clifton Tucker; two brothers, Paul Green and Dan Green; and four sisters, Frances Yost, Margarite Revis, Hetty Green and Mary Green.
Surviving are three sons, John Bradford Tucker and Steven L. Tucker, both of Cullowhee, and Douglas Lee Tucker of Costa Rica; one daughter, Patricia Ann Tucker Vein of Coral Springs, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Fred Brown
Fred Brown, 83, of Old Cullowhee Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 7), in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Revs. Carl Adams and Avery Brown officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home.
A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Jess F. and Guscelia Morgan Brown. He had lived in Jackson County for most of his life and was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the East LaPorte Masonic Lodge. He retired from Mead after 33 years of service.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Brown, Hugh Robert Brown and Hammie Brown; and one sister, Bonnie Cogdill.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Leola Hopper Brown; two daughters, Freddie Duncan of Gainesville, Ga., and Dottie Burnette of Marion; one sister, Delia Stanford of Sylva; three brothers, George Brown, Gene Brown and Delos Brown, all of Sylva; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Luther Woodring
Luther Woodring, 83, of Nicholson Cove Road, Cullowhee, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 7), in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kent Lowdermilk officiating. Burial will be in Queen Cemetery.
The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
A native of Jackson County where he had lived for most of his life, he was a son of the late Jim and Catherine Brown Woodring. He was a heavy equipment operator and had worked with Fuller Construction Company. He was a member of Johns Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by four sisters; six brothers; and two grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Alma Queen Woodring; one daughter, Linda Fowler of Waynesville; one son, Phillip Woodring of Mooresville; one sister, Nellie Williams of Pickens, S.C.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter.
