SHERYL RUDD OF DOWNTOWN SYLVA ASSOCIATION sent a note to remind everyone that the Bridge Park Project festival is this Saturday, Oct. 28, from 1 until 6 p.m. in Sylva’s Railroad Avenue municipal parking lot. The family-themed event will precede the Jackson County Recreation Department’s annual trick-or-treat opportunity in the neighborhood around St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Downtown merchants with the pumpkin sign in their windows (see DSA’s ad on page 2A) will also offer treats from 6 until 8 p.m.
CAROL ANN COPE, who is retiring after 30 years with the Jackson County Department of Social Services, will be honored this Friday, Oct. 27, with a drop-in reception from 2 until 4 p.m. at the DSS building on Webster Road. DSS Director Bob Cochran said Tuesday that everyone is invited to stop by and congratulate Carol Ann.
ACCORDING TO SYLVA MOOSE LODGE GOVERNOR RANDY MCCOY, murder suspect John “Woody” Woodring has never been a member of the local lodge. This newspaper reported several weeks ago that Woodring was a member of “the Loyal Order of Moose,” based on information on Woodring’s Web site.
WEBSTER BAPTIST CHURCH will hold a fall festival on Sunday, Oct. 29, from 5 until 7 p..m. The event will feature Bible games and family fun.

THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF JACKSON COUNTY (ARF) will hold its annual meeting/open house Saturday, Oct. 28, from 2 until 3 p.m. at its pet adoption location next to LifeWay Community Church in Sylva.
SIMS VALLEY will hold a preview event this Saturday, Oct. 28. Located between Glenville and Tuckasegee off Big Ridge Road, Sims Valley is named after its original settlers, who still have family in the area. It includes the 4,012-foot summit of Pilot Mountain and approximately 220 acres of valley floor as well as surrounding ridges on three sides. The community is being developed by Brookwood Properties, a regional development firm with projects in the Savannah, Ga., and Jacksonville, Fla., areas as well as locally with Buck Knob Landing (on the old Glenville School property) and Buck Knob Island in Lake Glenville, which is accessible only by boat. MOUNTAIN PROJECTS is making sure seniors will have a nice Christmas by sponsoring Christmas boxes for those 60 or older. The agency needs names of qualifying seniors who need a box as well as donations to fill the boxes.
GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS RAILROAD has brought “Peanuts – The Great Pumpkin Patch Express” to the area. Excursions depart from the Dillsboro Depot Friday, Oct. 27, and Sunday, Oct. 29, at 2:05 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 28, at 8:45 a.m. for The Great Pumpkin Patch. “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown will be read as the “Peanuts” train travels to the pumpkin patch. Upon arrival, guests will be greeted by and have a photo opportunity with Charlie Brown and Lucy. Activities for guests to enjoy include a coloring station, face painting, trick or treating, petting zoo, bouncy train and giant slide. Children can also navigate their way through a hay bale maze. Other activities include hay rides, apple cider or apple juice, and treats. Each child will select their own small pumpkin from the patch to take home. “There are no ghosts or goblins on this GSMR adventure, just a lot of fun and happy Halloween spirit,” a train publicist said.
