Then and now
Things looked a little different on Main Street before the Courthouse was built. While we don’t have an exact date on this downtown view (top photo), it has to be between 1906 when the Hooper House (4) was constructed and 1913 when the Courthouse was completed. The Hooper House, which is now home to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and Travel and Tourism Authority and the Downtown Sylva Association (formerly Sylva Partners in Renewal), is the only structure still standing. Sylva First United Methodist (8) is still in the same location, though the church facilities have expanded over the years. Other buildings in the top photo recognized by Rachel Phillips of Sylva include the Osborne Buchanan home (1), which once stood at the west end of Main Street; what is believed to be an Episcopal church and school (2); the Judson Allen (later W.W. Watt) home (3); the Thad Bryson house (5); the Billy Davis house, which was later known as the Pangle house (6); and the Henry Curtis house (7). – Photo courtesy of Bill Shuler (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
