Gary Crowe
Gary Dale Crowe, 60, of Sylva, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial followed at Tuckasegee Baptist Church Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Edison Crowe and Nina Mae Pannell Crowe Skinner. He was a self-employed land clearer.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Surviving is one adopted son, Todd DeWayne Crowe.
Eugene Mathis
Eugene Mathis, 64, of Caney Fork Road, Cullowhee, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at his residence after an extended illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at Balsam Grove Freewill Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Robert Styles officiating. Burial followed in Balsam Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Marion Mathis, Randy Mathis, Scott Farmer, Tinker Moffitt, Terry Shular, and Darren Allison.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Johnnie and Gertie Shular Mathis. He was a carpenter who had worked for several local builders and an avid squirrel hunter. He had served as a deacon at the church.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Sharon Claybo Mathis; one daughter, Leah Jones of Sylva; two sons, Doug Mathis and Daryl Mathis, both of Cullowhee; two sisters, Glaydell Cook of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., and Evelyn Prince of Cullowhee; nine brothers, L.C. Mathis, Newman Mathis, Dale Mathis and David Mathis, all of Cullowhee, Everette Mathis, Elmer Mathis and Larry Mathis, all of Sylva, Candler Mathis of Birdview, Wash., and Grady Mathis of Winthrop, Wash.; and three grandchildren.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Hazel Middleton
Hazel Matthews Middleton, 93, of Bear Lake Road, Tuckasegee, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at Fidelia Eckerd Living Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial followed in Rock Bridge Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ella Mae Owen Matthews. She worked as a clerk at Mountain Projects and was an avid cook, gardener, canner and quilter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ransom Robert Middleton, who died in 1986; one daughter, Imogene Bush; one brother and four sisters.
Surviving are four daughters, Willene M. Teague of Clarkston, Mich., Brona M. Stewart and Claire M. Pangle, both of Tuckasegee, and Natalie M. Owen of Sylva; three sisters, Gazella Pierson and Appless Hubbard, both of Brevard, and Wanda Owen of Easley, S.C.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
William Fisher
William G. Fisher, 23, of Sylva, died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home.
He was the son of Michael H. Fisher, Sr. and Harmina Mulder Fisher.
Bruce Clement
Paul Bruce Clement, 81, of Campground Cemetery Road, Whittier, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2006, at Greenville (S.C.) Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Campground Cemetery with graveside rites performed by the Dillsboro Masonic Lodge 459.
Pallbearers were Herbert Bradley, Steve Gass, William Shelton, Kenneth Sammons, Carol Sammons, and Keith Clark.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Walter Mack and Flora Parker Clement. He worked in construction, and retired from Clement Brothers Construction. He was an avid outdoorsman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Bumgarner Clement, who died in 1973; and four brothers, Clarence Clement, Carl Clement, Robert Clement and Couge Clement.
Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Fields of Buford, Ga., Mary Helen Clement of Whittier, and Bruce Ann Green of Sylva; one son, Johnny Bruce Clement of Inman, S.C.; one sister, Hazel Owen of Whittier; one brother, Fred Clement of Anderson, S.C.; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

John “Wass” Norris
John Roy “Wass” Norris, 81, of Flannel Mountain, Cashiers, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.
Services were scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Pine Creek Baptist Church, with the Revs. Johnny Norris and Wayne Price officiating. Burial was to follow in the church cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Della Stewart Norris. He attended Pine Creek Baptist Church. He retired from High Hampton Inn and Country Club and was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed bluegrass music and watching westerns.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Warner Norris and Bob Norris.
Surviving are one sister, Opal Tucker of Walhalla, S.C.; and one brother, Clarance Norris of Reardan, Wash.

Shelby Bass
Shelby D. Bass, Jr., 78, of Cullowhee, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers.

Kessie Reese
Kessie Bryson Reese, 84, of O’Donald Road, Asheville, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Mission Hospitals’ Mission Campus, following a brief illness.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bobby Winebarger and Dr. Ronnie Owen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Milt and Ella Mae Watson Bryson. She was raised in the Wayyehutta community. She had lived in Buncombe County for most of her life and retired from West Buncombe Elementary School, where she worked in the cafeteria. After retirement, she worked part-time at the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church daycare center. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Branson Reese, who died in 1985; and one brother, Ray Bryson.
Surviving are one son, Ronnie Reese of Asheville; two sisters, Faye Parker of Sylva and Nanny Brighton Arrington of Leicester; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Conrad McCall
Conrad McCall, 74, of McCall Road, Cashiers, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, at his residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, of which he was a member.
The Revs. Sherrill Hubbard and Walter Wilson officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Betty Bowman
Betty F. Bowman, 76, of Sylva, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2006.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home.
A daughter of the late Clarence Turner Sr., and Mamie Edna Hamilton, she was of the Catholic faith. She was an avid golfer.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Turner Jr., and Carson Ray Turner.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Allan Bowman; two daughters, Martina Kent of Tampa, Fla., and Clara Bowman of Sylva; one brother, William Eugene Turner of Charleston, S.C; and one granddaughter.
