The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Carol Young

Carol Ann Sawin Young, 59, of Sylva, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at her residence after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Cory Boone officiating. Another service is planned for St. Petersburg, Fla., on Saturday, Sept. 2.

She was born in Jackson, Miss., and moved to St. Petersburg in 1954. She graduated from Northeast High School in 1964. She attended St. Petersburg Junior College and received a master’s degree in special education from the University of South Florida, and an education specialist degree from Western Carolina University. She moved to Sylva in 1998 and taught at Scotts Creek Elementary School.

Surviving are one son, Jake Richard Young; two sisters, Sue Ellen Smith of St. Petersburg and Dawn Herms of Austin, Texas; and two brothers, Terry Richard Sawin of Glenville and Joe Sawin of Falcon, Colo.



Leanora Bradley

Leanora Bradley, 61, of Willets Road, Sylva, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at her sister’s residence after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Johnny Norris officiating. Burial was in Love Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she had worked at the Azalea Motel. She was a daughter of the late Eugene and Rosie Gilliland Bradley.

Surviving are one sister, Helen Crisp of Balsam; and five brothers, Glen Bradley of Whittier, Ben and Harold Bradley, both of Sylva, Cicero Bradley of Columbus, Ind., and Harlo Bradley of Grant Pass, Ore.



Wanda Moore

Wanda Jo Davis Moore, 76, of Beta Road, Sylva, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at her residence, after a period of declining health.

Services were held Sunday, Aug. 20, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

A native of Jackson County, where she had lived most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Pink and Lily Nations Davis.

Surviving are one daughter, Melanie Kim Moore of Sylva; one son, David Moore of Knoxville, Tenn.; one sister, Joyce Mills of Sylva; one brother, Edwin Davis of Atlanta, Ga.; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to one’s favorite charity.



George Davis

George Thomas Davis, 63, of Whittier, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at his residence.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Thomas Herbert

Thomas G. Herbert Jr., 92, of Sylva, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center, following a short illness.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Linda Marsh

Linda Sue Marsh, 65, of Whittier, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, at her residence.

Services are planned for a later date.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Clifton Kilby

Clifton Kilby, of Sugar Creek Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at his residence.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
