IT’S TIME FOR “CHRISTMAS IN JULY,” Catman2’s annual fund-raiser. The event is slated for Saturday, July 29, at the Community Service Center and will include both silent and live auctions to benefit the cat rescue/adoption center. Items to be auctioned include three large pieces of stained glass, an original watercolor cat by Asheville artist Elisabeth Sharrer, two cat watercolors by Sylva artist Pearl Tate, and an original pastel painted especially to honor Catman2 by Tuckasegee artist Doreyl Cain. Hers is a 20- by 30-inch collage of several rescued cats. There will be handmade quilts, local pottery and crafts. Kay Sims will sell fine gold and silver jewelry as well as costume items that will make great Christmas gifts. Many businesses have donated gift certificates for their food or services. A number of items have been donated by the Sims family and all proceeds will go to Catman2 Inc. All money will go to help the more than 60 cats in the shelter. Catman2 is an all volunteer organization and no one is paid a salary or is given other compensation. The Handmade Quilt will be raffled after the live auction. Festivities begin with a 4 p.m. flea market. A hot dog supper will be ready about 5 p.m. and the live auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. Cat videos will be shown during the evening. For information or to donate an item, call Harold Sims at 293-0892. Donated items are tax deductible. To learn more, visit the Web site at www.catman2.org.

WE RECEIVED A NICE NOTE from Jules Simmons telling us about the Kitchen Shop in Dillsboro. According to Simmons, Kitchen Shop owner Harold Jennings has a selection that’s better than many mall shops. “If you need it and he doesn’t have it, he can get it,” she wrote.
