Construction on the Jackson County Community Service Center had just started when the top photo was taken in 1970 as an unobstructed view of Liberty Baptist Church was still available from Jackson County Schools’ Central Office. The County Agricultural and Home Economics Extension Service became the first office to occupy the new building on Jan. 31, 1972. The Department of Social Services moved in the next day, and 13 more agencies followed over the next two weeks. The Department of Public Health was relocated to the Community Service Center around 1979 with ground broken for a Health Department addition two years later. Mobile units were later added for the Health Department. DSS moved to its new building on Webster Road last year with much of its former space now used by the Health Department. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove.
