Stern brothers to close ‘Summer Evenings’

Two young area musicians will present this summer’s final concert of the “Summer Evening in Webster” series.

The series of entertainments will close its 25th season this Sunday, July 30, with a 5:30 p.m. concert by the Stern Duo – Paul on violin and William, on piano – at the historic Webster Methodist Church.

Brothers William, left, and Paul Stern of Tuckasegee will close out the 25th anniversary season of “Summer Evening in Webster” with a piano and violin concert of favorite classical selections. The event will be Sunday, July 30, at 5:30 p.m. at the historic Webster Methodist Church. A churchyard reception to honor the musicians will follow the free concert.

Paul and William Stern first appeared in Webster while they were in high school. The brothers are now in college and both are studying music. The two have recently returned from music festivals, with Paul performing in New Zealand and William playing in Vermont.

The brothers have impressed local audiences with their violin and piano performances, said Joe Rhinehart, who coordinates the Summer Evenings programs.

Sunday’s concert will be the 125th in the Webster Historical Society’s series that began at Webster Methodist Church in July 1981.

The Sterns’ Sunday selections on Sunday will be favorites of Webster audiences along with pieces they have recently added to their repertory.

William, a second-year at the N.C. School for the Arts in Winston-Salem and Paul, a third-year student at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, are the sons of Jack and Peggy Stern of Tuckasegee. They are the grandsons of Ellen Wiley and the late Dr. Charles Bird.

All Summer Evenings performances are free and followed by a reception in the churchyard to honor the artists.
