Jack Arrington
C. Jack Arrington, 82, of Waynesville, died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, July 27) in the auditorium of Haywood Community College with the Rev. Michael Shuford and Bishop Russell Brown officiating. Burial will be in Ratcliff Cove Cemetery. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.
Pallbearers will be Dean Henline, Doug Earley, Jim Mackey, Albert Allen, Tom Parris, Tom Alexander, and Ben Parker. Honorary pallbearers will be David Inman, Jim Parton, Roger Reeves, Floyd Fulbright, Grady McCarter, Ricky Blanton, Stan Henry, Hugh Constance, Baron Clark, David Massie, William Arrington, David Clement, and members of Waynesville Masonic Lodge No. 259.
A native of Haywood County, he graduated from Waynesville Township High School and Western Carolina Teachers College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theater as a surgical assistant. He began work with the N.C. Highway Patrol and later became a teacher at Bethel High School and worked as Haywood County’s Health Inspector. He then worked for 23 years for the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department, first as a deputy and later served as a sheriff before retirement.
He was a Mason, a trustee at Western Carolina University and a member of NCFOP Haywood Lodge 16, VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. He was appointed honorary attorney general by Rufus Edmisten in 1982. He was a son of the late Cicero and Myrtle Whitner Arrington.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Arrington; two sisters, Margaret Morgan and Dorothy Wolfe; and two brothers, Albert and Charles Arrington.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Lillian Turner Arrington; one daughter, Mary Arrington; two sons, Jack and Joe Arrington; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Betty Anders
Betty Lou Rochester Anders, 64, of Sylva, died Friday, July 14, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville after a period of declining health.
Upon her request, there will be no services.
She was preceded in death by her father, Larman Clyde Rochester; and a granddaughter.
Surviving are her mother, Helen Bernice Rochester of Caney Fork community; her husband, Larry Anders, two sons, James Moffett of Hot Springs and Mark Taylor of Sylva; two brothers, Clyde Rochester, Jr., of Gainesville, Ga., and Johnny Rochester of Caney Fork, and a sister Elizabeth Bennett of Sylva.
Marshall Johnson
Marshall Preston Johnson, 18, of Murphy, died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at Erlanger Medical Center in Hamilton County, Tenn., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, July 27) at Little Brasstown Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Rev. Aud Brown officiating. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, at Townson Rose Funeral Home in Hayesville.
Pallbearers will be Jamey Johnson, Anthony Lyvers, Kyle Buckner, Brad O’Bryon, Jim Snow and Allen Morrow.
He was a native of Riverdale, Ga., and moved from Lavonia, Ga., to Cherokee County in 1999. He was a carpenter and employed by Brad O’Bryon Construction. He enjoyed being outdoors.
He is survived by his mother, Terrie Lewis of Warne; his father, Dennis Buckner of Cullowhee; one daughter, Mallory Johnson of Murphy; five brothers, Corey Johnson of Clayton County, Ga., Jamey Johnson of Hayesville, Kyle Buckner of Cullowhee, Robbie Johnson of Illinois and Shawn Buckner of Ontario, Calif.; one sister, Lauren Buckner of Ontario; and grandparents, Bob and Pat Edwards of Clayton County.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the family, P. O. Box 10, Murphy, NC 28906.
Mildred Whiddon
Mildred Lucille Langan Whiddon, 81, of Lakeland, Fla., died Friday, July 14, 2006.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the First Christian Church in Irvine, Ky., where she was a member.
She was born Jan. 8, 1925 in Irvine. She attended Eastern Kentucky University and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi sorority and served as the director of music in her church.
Her family moved to Whittier in 1967 and owned and operated Sunset Farms Resort. She was choir director at Whittier United Methodist Church and a member of the homemaker’s club. She taught in Cherokee Reservation schools. She was a daughter of the late Owen and Alma Langan.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Ray Whiddon; and a brother, Owen Langan II.
She is survived by three sons, Steve, Douglas, and Marshal Whiddon; two sisters, Mary Delamater and Dorothy Crowe; and a granddaughter.
Heath Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Murl Franks
Murl Young Franks, 73, of Glenville, died Thursday, July 20, 2006, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at Hamburg Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Matt Ledbetter, Johnny Norris and Berlis Powell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Randall Young, Roger Stewart, Eddie Stewart, Grady Woodring, Doyle Bumgarner and Gary Biller.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she worked in food service at High Hampton. She was a daughter of the late Ted and Iowa Moody Young.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Franks, who died in 1997; and a sister, Carolyn Nicholson.
Surviving are a son, Mike Franks of Glenville; four sisters, Florence Jennings of Highlands, Reba Johnson of Glenville, Winnona Stewart and Melva McCall, both of Cashiers; three brothers, Horace Young of Asheville, Candler Young of Cashiers and Hale Young of Pisgah Forest.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Caleb McFalls
Caleb Alden McFalls, infant son of Christopher Alden and Samantha Ashe McFalls of Cullowhee, died Friday, July 21, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at Fall Cliff Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Holden officiating.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his grandparents, Lyndon and Shelby Ashe of Sylva and Lisa and Terry Settlemyer of Sylva, and Joe and Sherry McFalls of Cullowhee; great-grandparents, Joyce and Earl Dowdle of Sylva, Lee Ashe of Sylva, Frankie and Marvin Mashburn of Franklin, and Bill and Euna Raye Carpenter of Sylva.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Iva Nell Ashe and George and Marie McFalls.

Talmadge Fox
Talmadge W. Fox, 57, of Cullowhee, died Friday, July 21, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 22, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clemmy Queen officiating. Burial was in Hooper Speedwell Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tommy Stovall, Lenn Wilkes, Randy Fox, Marvin Wilkes, Dennis Fox and Darrell Arrwood.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he had been in retail sales working last at Southern Lumber; he was a member of Speedwell Baptist Church. He was the son of Ona Bee Deitz Fox of Cullowhee, and the late Weaver Fox.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Fox, and a granddaughter.
Surviving in addition to his mother are three daughters, Karen Baggett of Burlington, and Gina Fox and Amy Fox, both of Asheville; a son, Drew Fox of Cullowhee; and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Speedwell Baptist Church Building Fund.
Jack Polson
Jack A. Polson Jr., 73, of Whittier, died Monday, July 24, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home, with the Revs. Lelon Greene and Sherrill Ammons officiating. Burial was in Holly Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dennis Messer, Clinton Messer, Chris Cabe, Hank Odiear, Rick Shuler, and Jeff Matthews.
A native of Swain County, he attended Conley’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Jack and Grace Watkins Polson.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Edmond Polson.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Hazel Odiear Polson; one daughter, Faye Cabe of Dillsboro; two sons, Curtis and Jeff Polson, both of Sylva; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold and Bobby Polson, both of Virginia; and two sisters, Dorothy Brown and Debbie Finch, both of Virginia.
