Game at UNC is highlight of WCU women’s schedule
A Dec. 10 visit to North Carolina, a Final Four participant from last year, highlights the 2006-07 Western Carolina women’s basketball schedule.
The Tar Heels were ranked number one in the nation for much of last season. Their lineup includes All-American guard Ivory Latta and former Asheville High star Rashanda McCants. Rising Smoky Mountain senior Cetera DeGraffenreid has committed to play for Coach Sylvia Hatchell’s team in 2007-08.
WCU’s schedule includes 18 Southern Conference games plus the league tournament Feb. 27-March 3 in Charleston, S.C.
The Lady Cats will open the season at home Nov. 10 against Auburn of the Southeastern Conference.
In addition to UNC, Western will meet another Atlantic Coast Conference opponent on Nov. 14 at Wake Forest.
“We, once again, have a tough schedule for our team,” Coach Kellie Harper said. “We are excited about the challenges ahead and hope that our pre-conference schedule prepares us for our most important SoCon games. SEC opponent Auburn comes to Cullowhee to open up our season during an exciting WCU weekend, and we also travel to ACC opponents Wake Forest and Final Four participant North Carolina. We have a long tough stretch of road games including a tournament at Colorado State and Xavier, but we’re counting on it making us a better team.”
After playing 11 of its first 13 games away from home, Western will be at the Ramsey Center 10 times during the final two months of the season.
Prior to the official season opener, WCU will host Mars Hill in an exhibition on Nov. 5.
Following the Auburn game, Western will hit the road for seven straight weeks before playing Eastern Michigan in the Ramsey Center on Dec. 30.
Included in the road trip will be tournaments at Xavier (Nov. 17-18) and Colorado State (Nov. 24-25).
Western will open conference play Dec. 18 at Wofford. The last 16 games of the year will be in the league starting Jan. 2 at Elon.
