Two pedestrians hit by cars last week at Wal-Mart Plaza

By Carey Phillips

Two pedestrians were struck by cars on consecutive days last week at Wal-Mart Plaza.

The first incident occurred about 5 p.m. last Thursday (July 13) when Audrey Hartsell, 41, of Bryson City was hit by a car driven by Helen Swayngim, 80, of Cullowhee, according to Sylva Police Chief Jeff Jamison.

Hartsell was treated and released at Harris Regional Hospital, Jamison said.

Officer Davis Woodard, who investigated the incident, charged Swayngim with failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Carl Timmerman of Whittier was the victim of an incident at 9:45 a.m. Friday (July 14). That accident is still under investigation by Officer Tom Tenhagen. The driver is unknown.

“The driver stopped, but the pedestrian said he was all right so the driver left,” Jamison said. “It was a little later that he realized he needed medical attention.”

Timmerman was also treated and released at Harris Regional.

“It’s very busy out there this time of year,” Jamison said of having two incidents on consecutive days. “In both cases, it appears the drivers just weren’t paying enough attention. In one situation, the driver was watching pedestrians on the opposite side of the vehicle. In the other incident, the driver told the pedestrian he was looking for a parking space. People just need to be careful and keep their speed down.”
