The famed Jackson County Courthouse appeared topless in this November 1994 photo taken just after the cupola was removed for repairs, which were completed in the historic structure’s parking lot. Once the dome’s restoration was complete, it was painted white, replacing the former green, and replaced in May 1995. A complete paint job during the summer of 1997 dressed the 93-year-old Courthouse in ice cream colors of lemony cream and lime. More renovations and paint in 2004-05 restored the structure’s familiar white walls and dark green dome. Built by entrepreneur C.J. Harris in 1913, the old Courthouse is believed to be Jackson County’s most-photographed building. Harris promised local voters that he would construct a courthouse in Sylva for a sum not to exceed $30,000 if they approved a referendum calling for the removal of the county seat from Webster to Sylva. The measure passed after a contentious campaign, and Harris was awarded a contract. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove.
