Photographer Turlington to showcase images at gallery event

By Lynn Hotaling

A local photographer will introduce his newest work during an open house this Friday night.

Penumbra owner Matthew Turlington will host the event at his Main Street gallery from 6:30 until 11 p.m. Friday, July 21. The exhibit will include a number of images that are part of Turlington’s downtown Sylva series as well as his acclaimed Jackson Paper photos.

The new images are examples of his studio work, he said.

“Quintessence,” a studio photograph by Matthew Turlington, is one of the photographer’s new images that will be premiered during an opening reception this Friday, July 21, from 6:30 until 11 p.m. at Penumbra on Main Street. Turlington will also exhibit his collection of downtown Sylva images and some older work. The free event will include live music by Ashley Chambliss and Chris Cooper, and Cooking with Quanta.

“Quintessence,” a study of daisy flowers arranged on soil, is an example of Turlington’s effort to manipulate and photograph objects in such a way that he can re-create his mental image.

Turlington, a North Carolina native, graduated from Pender High School in Burgaw before attending three different colleges in the course of his art studies. He earned a commercial art degree from James Sprunt Community College in Kenansville; a bachelor’s degree in art from Western Carolina University; and a master’s in fine arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

After completing his degree at UC-Boulder, Turlington, who was familiar with Sylva from his days at WCU, returned to the area to live.

“Sylva’s a good location for an artist and a fantastic place to be,” he said.

Photographer Matthew Turlington of Sylva will open an exhibition of his recent work this Friday, July 21, from 6:30 until 11 p.m. at his Main Street gallery, Penumbra. Turlington’s event will feature live music and will coincide with a downtown gallery stroll.

His initial Penumbra gallery was located above Main Street where Terri Clark’s photo studio is now. Turlington moved into his present location – the space that housed Sol Schulman’s store for more than 70 years – last August.

“It’s time to have an opening event and invite the community to see my work,” Turlington said.

Turlington, who has photos on display in a couple of downtown restaurants, timed his Penumbra event to coincide with Friday’s downtown Sylva art stroll. Other participating galleries include Gallery One; It’s By Nature, which continues to feature an exhibit by Sylva Herald photographer Nick Breedlove; Arsenal Artifacts; and Killer Creek Co., a new Main Street custom furniture and art store.
