The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Wanda Nations

072006wandanationsWanda Jo Carnes Nations of Aberdeen, Wash., formerly of Dillsboro, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.

Services were held Friday, July 7, at Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen. Burial was in the Fern Hill Cemetery. A memorial service was held Friday, July 7, at Long Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Avery Brown and Charles Carnes officiating.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Carnes, Jr.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Joey.

She is survived by her husband, Willie Nations; three daughters, Connie Yakovich, Sherry Andrews, and Marcie Holcomb; four grandsons and two great-granddaughters; three sisters, Rita Carnes of Aberdeen and Linda Cooper and Debbie Carnes Sutton, both of Dillsboro; four brothers, Robert Carnes of Whittier, Dan and Johnny Carnes of Aberdeen, and J.C. Carnes of Dillsboro.



Martha Ashe

Martha Ethel Welch Ashe, 55, of Edgewater, Fla., died Friday, July 14, 2006, after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 16, in the chapel of Hospice of Volusia/Flagler in Port Orange, Fla.

She was a Macon County native and a former resident of Jackson County. She had lived in Edgewater since 1984 and was a self employed health care provider. She spent her leisure time gardening and with her grandchildren. She was the daughter of Ruth Welch of Pittsville, Va., and the late Robert Welch.

Surviving in addition to her mother are, her husband, Geoffery Hughes; three daughters, Rebecca Henson of Webster, Teresa Baldwin of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Dianne Koontz of Richmond, Va.; one son, Doug Ashe of Sylva; two grandchildren; two sisters, Linda Ashby of Pittsville and Wanda Holt of West Virginia; and two brothers, Virgil Welch of Greensboro and Donald Welch of Pittsville.



Annie Conley

Annie Cloer Ledford Conley, 85, of Franklin, died Friday, July 14, 2006.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 17, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home with the Revs. Dennis Burrell, Tommy Fouts, Andy Cloer and Bobby Cloer officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, David Shuler, Marty Mashburn, Rick Mashburn, Jonathan Tope, Shane Melton and Dustin Melton. Honorary pallbearers will be James Mashburn, David Mashburn and Preston Mashburn.

A native of Macon County, she was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church. She enjoyed flowers and gardening. She was the daughter of the late Ceburn Cloer and Laura Ella McCracken Cloer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Ellis Ledford and Charlie Conley; infant son, Ricky Ellis Ledford; five brothers, Glenn, Albert, Johnny, Howard and William T. Cloer; two sisters, Lucy Cloer and Helen Ensley; and one grandson.

She is survived by four daughters, Rebecca Shuler of Sylva, Linda Tope of Orion Township, Mich., Mary Ellen Mashburn and Frankie Mashburn, both of Franklin; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Hazel Bryson

Hazel Lee Greene Bryson, 85, of Cullowhee, died Friday, July 14, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 16, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home, with the Revs. Ron Allen and Roy Burnette officiating. Burial was in Bumgarner-Fall Cliff Cemetery on Cullowhee Mountain Road, with a graveside service conducted by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 104.

Pallbearers were Granville Wilson, Lester Bryson, Joe McFalls, J.E. Wheatley, Gordon Brown and Randy Hill. Honorary pallbearers were Andrew Dolge and Dr. John Edwards.

A native of Jackson County, she was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Whittier. She worked at Western Carolina University laundry for 17 years. She was a member of Speedwell United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 104 and was an honorary member of Disabled American Veterans. She was a strong supporter of all veterans, the military, and the Democratic party. She was a daughter of the late Christopher and Alice Brown Greene.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hansel Bryson; four sisters, Bertie and Mazie Marie Greene, Daisey Lawrence and Allie Anthony; and four brothers, Laburn, Renas, Hanley and Dexter Greene. She was the last surviving member of her family.

Surviving is her daughter, Joyce Bryson Crowder of Cullowhee.

Carolyn Doyle

Carolyn Gibson Doyle, 84, of Silver Spring, Va., died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Riderwood Village Retirement Home.

She was born in Lake Junaluska, and lived in Sylva during the 1930s and 1940s. She was a 1938 graduate of Sylva High School. She received an associate’s degree from what is now Western Carolina University. She did secretarial work for Southern Railway in Mobile, Ala., and the Tennessee Valley Authority electrification project in Knoxville, Tenn.

She settled in the Washington, D.C. area in 1945 and did secretarial work for the U.S. Army. After years as a homemaker, she began working for Ferry-Morse Seed Co., delivering seed packets to retailers in Northern Virginia. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service from 1965 to 1988, mostly as an editorial assistant in the technical publications branch. She retired as a Freedom of Information officer.

A long-time Arlington, Va., resident, she was active in the local civil rights movement and campaigned in favor of fair housing in the 1960s. She was in an amateur singing group called the Merrymakers.

She was a member of the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington. She was the daughter of the late Herbert and Robbie Gibson. Her father was former mayor of Sylva.

She was also preceded in death by husbands, Richard M. Howell and Edward J. Doyle; and a son, Robert Doyle.

Surviving are a son, Edward Doyle of Morgantown, W.Va., a daughter, Evelyn Harris of Crofton, Va.; a brother, John Gibson of Bristol, Va.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.



Ryan Russell

072006ryanrussellDonnie Ryan Russell, 25, of Cullowhee, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at his home.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 15 in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Robbie and Brian Sipes officiating. Burial was in Emmas Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Scott Hooper, Chris Cole, Chris Waters, Robbie Treadway, Nicky Nesbitt, and Brad Cartee.

He was born in Henderson County and was a graduate of Dallas High School in Dallas County, Ala. He was a member of the Blessed Hope Bible Fellowship in Fairview and an employee of McNeeley Store Rental. He was a son of Wanda Nesbitt White of Candler and James Richard Russell of Opelika, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Chester Earwood.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Allison; three children, Ashleigh Bass, Dakota Russell, and Mary Russell; step-father, Steve White; step-mother Cindy Russell; grandparents, David and Faye Nesbitt of Fairview, and Leon and Jeanette Russell of Plantersville, Ala.; and a brother, James Russell of Wallington, Conn.

Memorials may be made to the Ryan Russell Children’s Trust through any First Citizens Bank.



Jimmy Arrwood

James “Jimmy” Arrwood, 69, of Sylva, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 16, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Ashe officiating. Burial was in Long Branch Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jack Sutton, Dean Wilkey, Huty Stephens, Eddie Mace, Anthony Mace, Danny Parris and Ricky Lillard.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was an avid gardener and fisherman, a self-employed painter, and the son of the late Thomas “Tom” and Florence Green Arrwood.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Mace Arrwood; three sisters, Nettie Mae King, Virginia Bressett and Frances Arrwood; and four brothers, L.C., Edgar, Wilburn and Bobby Eugene Arrwood.

Surviving are his son, James Tommy Arrwood of Sylva; one sister, Barbara Stephens of Sylva; and two grandchildren.



Joseph Nathan

Joseph N. Nathan, 86 of Waynesville, died Sunday, July 9, 2006.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, at Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, with the Cantor Debbie Winston officiating.

He was one of four children, born in the Bronx, N.Y. He graduated from the New York University School of Engineering. He was a retired Major in the U.S. Army and served in World War II in the Philippines. He was the founder of Nathan & Ross Structural Steel Consultants in New York City where accomplishments include engineering of numerous dams and bridges, power plants, NY State Pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s fair, Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral, FL and Madison Square Garden. He was a son of the late Saul and Marsah Figerwich Nathan.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Nathan; a sister, Charlotte; a brother, Irving; and a grandson.

Surviving are a brother, Myron; three sons, Richard, Barry, and Henry; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren

Memorials can be made to the Congregation Beth Ha Tephila, Haywood Regional Medical Center Foundation, Haywood County School Foundation’s Benjamin Nathan Scholarship or a charity of one’s choice.

Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
