To the Editor:
I wish to remind everyone that Catman2 Rescue Shelter is having a “Christmas in July” fund-raising event Saturday, July 29, at the Community Service Center.
For those of you who may not know about the Catman2 Shelter in Cullowhee, it is owned and operated by Harold Sims. Sims, who was selected as the “ultimate cat lover” by Cat Fancy Magazine last year, is a person who puts his money where his mouth is. Unable to find enough funds to build a place for the cats, he used his own money, time and labor to construct a 3,600-square-foot building that houses an average of 60 cats everyday. Each year he finds homes for more than 150 cats that come to him as strays, are abandoned or given up by former owners, or are rescued from the Jackson County Animal Shelter. In 10 years, he has found homes for more than 2,000 cats.
All this costs a lot of money. Operating costs run about $35,000 per year. This includes vet bills, food, medications, and other expenses such as phone and electricity. The work is done by Harold and his wife, Kay, with the help of loyal volunteers. No one is paid a salary or other compensation. All income must come from donations. Catman2 receives no government contributions. If funds fall short the money comes “out of pocket.” This year expenses have been higher than normal due to compliance with new state regulations that control animal shelters.
Please plan to attend this charity event. When you buy or bid on an item remember all the money will go to help the unfortunate cats of Jackson and surrounding counties. For more information or a tour of the shelter, check out the web page www.catman2.org or call Sims at 293-0892.
