Planning for pedestrians

Installation of pedestrian crossing signals, another component of Sylva's 18-month-old Streetscape project, is under way at three Main Street intersections. N.C. Department of Transportation crew members Tim Ashe of Cullowhee, left, and Steven Buchanan of Dillsboro put the finishing touches on the signals at the Grindstaff Cove/Schulman/Main intersection (next to Wachovia Bank) last Friday. Crossing signals at that intersection are operational now, DOT traffic signal supervisor Steve Heim said Tuesday, and those at Walnut (soon to be Landis -see story from Sylva board meeting) and Spring streets are expected to be working within a week. The new pedestrian signals will be coordinated with traffic lights to work with traffic movement, Heim said.
