In recognition of Veterans Day, a ceremony was held on the steps of the old Jackson County Courthouse to honor all U.S. veterans, especially those from Jackson County. Sponsored by AmVets Post 441 and William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104, the event included a 21-gun salute and a symbolic table set for POW/MIAs who have not returned from battle. The table, small to symbolize the frailty of a prisoner against his suppressors, was covered by a white tablecloth symbolizing the purity of his intentions to respond to our county's call to arms. A single rose in the vase signified blood shed in sacrifice, while red ribbons represented ribbons worn on the lapels of the thousands who demand a proper account of missing comrades. The candle was reminiscent of the light of hope, while the American flag reminds us that many POW/MIAs may never return, having paid the supreme sacrifice to ensure freedom. |
