New playground equipment at Jackson County Recreation Park

Herald photo by Lynn Hotaling

New playground equipment at Jackson County Recreation Park was a hit with area children who played nonstop Saturday despite fall's first cold snap. Purchased with funds from a $438,000 grant from the state's Recreation Trust fund, the playground is the newest addition to the county recreation department's Speedwell facility.

Other grant money will be used toward a 2-mile walking/jogging trail around both the park and adjacent Cullowhee Valley School, 11 picnic shelters, basketball courts, tennis courts, another play area, a fishing area and a pavilion. Also on the horizon for the county park is a gymnasium/multipurpose building to be funded through county commissioners' capital improvement plan. The Cullowhee park currently has soccer and softball fields as well as a concession/restroom building.
