Rabies confirmed in county, health official says

By Lynn Hotaling

With a confirmed case of rabies in Jackson County, health officials are urging pet owners to take proper precautions for their animals.

A fox that had been acting in an unusual fashion was killed last week in the Blanton Branch area, said Chris Tyson, lead animal control officer for the county. Test results Tuesday proved the animal was rabid.

"Jackson County is now on the map as a rabid county," Tyson said about the confirmation. In the future, he said, state officials will presume that animals from this county that show symptoms of rabies do in fact have the disease.

Confirmation of one rabid animal leads officials to assume the presence of other diseased wildlife here, Tyson said.
