Planners to request extension of sign moratorium

By Lisa Majors-Duff

A subcommittee of the county planning board finalized its version of a draft off-premise sign ordinance Tuesday, and a request for an extension of the current 60-day moratorium is expected at tonight's (Thursday's) commissioners' meeting.

The subcommittee's approval of the proposed ordinance came two weeks before the county's moratorium on new billboards and other off-premise signs was set to expire Oct. 19. Planning Board Chairman Dean Coward said Tuesday that he'll request a 60-day extension so the full planning board can review the document and make its recommendations to the commissioners.

Should the process reach that point, commissioners can then decide to hold a public hearing to take comments on the proposed ordinance. Only then could the county board vote up or down on making it county law.
